I've been in the PR/communications business for 14 years. I've worked with all types of people and all types of characters. One of my favorite co-workers is Tyler Tumminia, Vice President of Integrated Marketing of the Goldklang Group - a sports entertainment consulting and management firm. The Group provides operational consulting and management services in all areas relating to sports franchise and event acquisition, promotion and operation.
You're probably asking me why the heck are you talking about PR and someone you used to work with? Here's the connection.
The Goldklang Group manages the Brockton Rox, a local baseball team located in Brockton, MA. Since the 2005 season, they have played in the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball (the "Can-Am League"), an independent league that is not affiliated with Major League Baseball or with the Minor League Baseball organization.
What's really cool about this team is that it brings a semi-pro baseball team to an area that is known for it's sports legends, specifically Rocky Marciano and Marvin Haggler. As a matter of fact, the only two numbers that are retired in terms of uni-numbers are 49 and 62, the number of fights won by each fighter respectively. The Rox bring that MLB feeling to a state that's already filled with baseball life. Add the Lowell Spinners and obviously the Red Sox, and you have a state that's jam-packed with baseball. Yours truly loves it!
Now, back to Tyler.
Despite being a New Yorker and a Yankee fan, Tyler knows her stuff. She is one of a very few woman executives in baseball. I remember our fierce talks in the office when I would come into work before the start of the Red Sox season (prior to 2004) and say “T- this is the year baby!” and how she would give me that "I told you so look" when towards the end of the season and said came to the conclusion that “It’s over. I’m rooting for the Pats now.” Tyler's dad is also works in baseball, but at the MLB level so needless to say, Tyler has been around baseball her entire life. She's a walking baseball encyclopedia. She was even named after Ty Cobb, as legend has it.
